ABOUT THE BOOK - A New Story - We live in a world in crisis. We are faced with a crisis of security. The real estate and banking systems are in turmoil. Workers are being laid off in alarming numbers. People still on the job wonder if they will be next, as they attempt to juggle their jobs as well as the jobs of those no longer employed. Those laid off are uncertain that they will find employment in a shrinking job market. We are faced with a crisis of identity, of values, and of our relationship with our inner most being. We don’t know who we are or what is most important in life. We are left without a compass by which to navigate. Without knowing who we are or what is most important, we are not able to align with our inner highest self. We face a poverty and crisis of integrity. There is a crisis of leadership, a woeful lack of authentic leaders who are guided by their own integrity and alignment and who inspire integrity and alignment in those around them. Lack of energy, enthusiasm, joy, and a sense of purpose are the norm for those who are fortunate enough to have jobs, arising from an epidemic crisis of meaning.
How do individuals experience meaning in work? In a recent study Laura Frey Horn concluded that transcendent individuals (i.e. those who continue to develop as adults into greater complexity) experience meaning in work as integral to their lives. She found that they are "often pioneers creating new meaning and new skills for self and others." Further, she found that if necessary, "they will leave an organization, usually to begin one that honors their fully integrated lives." Alan Fricker describes our society as in " . . . crisis-ecological, social, economic crisis -- because we do not have a good story. We are between stories. The old story of how we understand the world . . . and how we fit into it is no longer effective. We have yet to learn the new story. . . ."
I believe the same crisis of meaning occurs in our individual lives as in society as a whole. It occurs when the old story no longer provides meaning for us. As Fricker describes, "We become alienated from our innermost selves but are unable to fully repress the hunger for meaning." Meaning exists not as a singular event. It is constructed as we engage in the ongoing process. As we unfold our path we come to understand our Life on Purpose.
A unique juxtaposition of events, timing, and evolution put us in the right place at the right time to set the standards for a new story, and to begin to flesh out its pages. Will we try to salvage the old one, dressing it up in new clothes perhaps, cloaking it in new trendy catch-phrases that will be old hat in a few short years, or are we to seize the opportunity to start anew from a stronger, more expansive foundation? What a story we could create, if many began to write it from the foundation of the human capacity for expansive life, wisdom, and living Life on Purpose. We hold the power of our future -- my future, your future, our children’s future -- in our hands, now.
This is not a how-to business book. You can get that information elsewhere. This book is about doing what you were born to do: finding and engaging in a life on purpose through writing a new story for yourself, your work, and the world. This book is about life transitions the discovery of how to get from the old story to our new story.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR – Joan King’s life path embodies the blending of the hard and noetic sciences. At the tender age of seventeen, she stepped into life at the Dominican convent in her hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana. Eleven years later she left that religious training to become a chemist, then received a Ph.D. in neuroscience and psychology. Her twenty-year tenure as a professor at Tufts University School of Medicine, lead her to a dynamic crossroads of personal self-discovery. She left academia. Her new found “inner knowing” ignited the writing of her book Cellular Wisdom. It became the foundation in understanding how our bodies model the teachings of our beliefs. Joan King’s blending of science and spirituality birthed her professional coaching business, Beyond Success LLC, in 1998.
Today, Joan is helping others apply these same dynamics for women and men in relationships and business as a Master Certified Coach. You may visit her website at http://www.cellular-wisdom.com.
