April Is National Autism Awareness Month

Autism SpeaksAt Autism Speaks, our goal is to change the future for all who struggle with autism spectrum disorders.

On April 2nd, World Autism Awareness Day, the head honchos at Autism Speaks (Bob and Suzanne Wright) rang the starting bell at the New York Stock Exchange. At the United Nations, NYC, artist Yoko Ono Lennon unveiled an original work called “Promise Piece” that she created.

"When I was first approached to create an artwork for Autism awareness, I was shocked by the worldwide prevalence of this serious situation especially amongst our children. We are now standing in the new age together, armed with so much incredible knowledge on how to heal the world. So there is no reason we can’t find a cure for Autism as well. Let’s shed light to this serious problem, work together, and make it well. My work “Promise Piece” symbolizes that we all hold a piece of this puzzle, and we must work to raise awareness, funds for research, and advocates for families who experience autism. The promise piece consists of sixty seven sky of promise pieces in total, and 67 million people have autism around the world. Each Promise Piece will be auctioned online and donated to Autism Speaks in order to raise awareness for autism." ~ Yoko Ono Lennon

Six Tails - by Pat PostekPat Postek wrote her first children’s book, Six Tails, out of her desire to share her grandmother wisdom with her grandchildren, two of whom were diagnosed with Autism while she was writing this book.

Six Tails is a heart-warming must-read to a child or by a child for parents and grandparents, aunties and uncles, or adults caring for children ages 4-8 who wish to impart some solid life lessons on how to become adaptable when life presents change.

Cinco moves to the city; Frasier losses his way; Stasha takes an adventure on a magic carpet ride; Barkeless Bentley discovers his gifts; Fred follows his nose and discovers the joy of exploring; and Lily loves jewelry. Their “tails” will touch your lives, brings smiles to your face, and inspire lots of conversation in your home.

*A portion of the proceeds of this book are donated to Autism Speaks.
